This collection includes a small selection of wood-fired works from a recent firing in the Cobb Mountain Art and Ecology Project's train-style kiln. While wood firing is not something I do often these days, I was particularly excited about this opportunity to explore how different fuel sources shape the surface of the work.
The primary intention of this firing was to investigate the natural ash glazes produced by manzanita and cottonwood. Traditionally, we fire this kiln with fir and oak, but for this experiment we replaced the oak with a combination of manzanita and cottonwood. The two woods proved to be remarkably complementary. Manzanita produces a dark grey to black ash that is highly refractory on its own, while cottonwood creates a glossier, more fluid surface. Together, they yielded a rich range of subtle ash deposits and atmospheric effects that would not have been possible with either wood independently.
These special woodfired works are mixed in with a selection of fine soda fired wares.
